Its the freaking middle of March!! That means summer is right around the corner! & Honestly, I don't think I'm prepared for this! BUT for all of you that decided to join Team Silver/White hair this winter, here are my tips to keep your hair from turning brassy from the sun!
So when you bleach your hair, it's preferred to keep your hair 'dirty'. Dirty, meaning not washing it as often to avoid drying our your hair. The more oils, the more protection. But when summer time comes around & those 90 degree days are making you sweat bullets so badly & the ocean is literally calling your name to cool off, GO FOR IT! Because now, you'll be able to keep your hair as keen as it was the day you walked out of the hairdresser.
Invest in a purple shampoo & conditioner! My preferred brand is Shimmer Lights & it can be purchased at a beauty supply store. Don't be nervous when you use it at first, because it is straight up purrrrple! But when you look on a color wheel, what cancels out yellow (brassiness)? Purple!
You can simply follow the directions on the bottles, or wing it. If my hair is super brassy, i'll leave it in longer, vice versa. & it's okay if you over tone it a bit (personally I like that!), it'al fade from the next time you wash your hair.
**advice** Always use a deep conditioner afterwards to make your hair more manageable when you get out of the shower.
The ocean, pool water, & over-washing hair can really take its toll of damage. Especially pools. Not only do the chlorine chemicals damage your hair, but also destroys bikinis!!! (guys, that's a big deal). So to keep your hair healthy & strong after bleaching, avoid pools!
Try not to brush hair as often, especially when wet. Hair is much more fragile in this state, & is more susceptible to breaking! Be sure, if you do, use a wide tooth comb.
**ALSO! invest in a all wooden brush. These types of brushes (vs. plastic) don't rip hair & actually spread the oil from your scalp throughout your hair, to avoid oil build up. Plus, they are much better for the environment, as most of them are made from bamboo (a very sustainable plant!).
Avoid heat. I know how much girls love hair straighteners, but please refrain from use! I did a mini study on myself, & found out that when I straightened my hair, my ends became more fragile & I had way more split ends than if I were to let it go all natural. If you don't like your natural mane, try a braid! I have a ton of braid inspo on my instagram! ( @GabsGetGnarly )
Stay golden xx ;)
